A professional independent scheme secretary is as fundamental to good governance as an independent trustee.

A successful trustee board needs:
- a strong chairman, knowledgeable scheme secretary and a good relationship with the scheme sponsor.
- complementary skills and appropriate knowledge amongst members
- appropriate allocation of time for compliance, governance and delivery of business plans, strategies and projects
- clear direction as to what decisions are required and by when
- timely preparation and distribution of agendas and papers
- appropriate information and advice on which to make decisions.
- co-ordination of all relevant parties (advisers, administrators, sponsors, etc)
- clear minutes and record keeping
- regular review of budgets, controls, financial reports and risks.
- streamlined reporting and the right policies, procedures and delegations to ensure compliance with scheme rules and regulations.
